more work

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dave @ 7:27 pm

so, windows are now in, loft insulated and hall/landing lights not only switch seperately, but can be switched on/off from the top/bottom of the stairs! LOTS of finishing to do, but at least we’re no longer paying gritish bas to heat the pigeons!

HTC Desire

Filed under: technology — Jackie @ 12:45 pm

OK, so Dave is usually the new tech geek (and very useful it is too!), but I have decided to move forward in tech time and have purchased a HTC Desire smart phone .  It runs on android software that took a little more setting up than Dave’s ipod touch, but once that is done works really well (especially with google stuff!).  The only issue I have had so far is that I can only access yahoo mail via POP… easily sorted

A clean loft

So after a long weekend of shovelling, bagging, lowering, vacuuming & numerous trips to the tip we no longer have a loft full of soot! Mundane though this may seem, it allows us to push on with far more rewarding jobs in the house; re-wires, plumbing and perhaps even some decorating are all now on the cards…

having been given a garmin GPS for my birthday (thanks Jax!), I’ve been looking at software to get it running in ubuntu. QLandkarte looked to be a good option (an upgrade to Qlandkarte GT is pending release of Lucid Lynx) but although this talks nicely to the GPS, it doesn’t have any maps built in. So a bit more googling led me to http://openmtbmap.org/ and I happily downloaded the great britain maps. However, this come as a .7z.zip file, which ubuntu couldn’t deal with. Intially installing the p7zip didn’t work but after finding this post it loaded up p7zip-full and away we go… now, which of hte 54 .img files has the Leeds maps…?

soot…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — Dave @ 12:51 pm

so having bought an OLD house, we seem to have 200years worth of soot from leaky chimenies lying on top of the delicate lathe and plaster ceilings! Having cleared the area over the damaged ceiling in the office, we’ve been looking for an alternative method to get rid of it. Having now spoken with a chimney sweep, I’m resigned that there’s only one way – shovel it up and hover the left overs! So, if you try to call round and get no reply on the weekend, you’ll know why – I’m in the loft, digging!

Spotify in linux – yeah!

So I now have a basic spotify account, and having got it going in windows decided it was good. Except for the windows bit as I’m much happier in ubuntu… Fortunately, they give instructions for installing under wine so I gave this a go. Unfortunately, it didn’t playback, even though wine audio worked. Good news is that a brief google-wack and an upgrade to wine1.2 later and we’re all go :) happy chappie
